Dear Greenpeace Supporter,

Greenpeace report cover: Slaughtering the Amazon

Our new report, Slaughtering the Amazon, tracks leather, beef, and other cattle products from ranches in the Amazon that are involved in illegal deforestation, slave labor, and abuses of Indigenous rights to a complex global supply chain that is laundering Amazon deforestation and feeding the demand for raw resources to make popular name brand products. Read more.

When you lace up your favorite pair of shoes, you could unknowingly be unraveling the Amazon rainforest. It turns out leather coming from the Amazon rainforest is being used to make a number of consumer products, perhaps even the Nike, Adidas, Timberland, or Reebok shoes you're wearing right now.

Take Action NOW >> Tell Adidas, Nike and others that every step counts when it comes to saving the Amazon, so it’s time they step up.

Greenpeace report cover: Slaughtering the Amazon

The Amazon rainforest is a biodiversity hot spot, home to forest-dependent communities and thousands of plant and animal species. It’s also critically important to our climate. Forest destruction accounts for almost 1/5 of global greenhouse gas emissions—that is more climate pollution than all the world’s cars, trucks, trains, planes and ships combined.

The cattle industry—which supplies leather for shoes—is responsible for about 80% of all deforestation in the Amazon. In fact, the Brazilian cattle industry is the largest single source of deforestation in the world—and the demand for leather means more Amazon rainforest cleared to graze cattle.

After 3 years of investigations, Greenpeace has uncovered a complex trail of destruction that begins in the Amazon rainforest and ends up at our feet. We are asking Nike, Adidas, Timberland, Reebok, Clark’s and Geox to refuse to use leather that is destroying the Amazon.

Tell the CEOs of Adidas, Nike, Timberland and others to support a moratorium on Amazon deforestation and to help us fight for a global solution to save the Amazon and our climate. We cannot afford to lose an acre of Amazon every 8 seconds because of our demand for leather.

Sincerely,

Lindsey Allen
Forest Campaigner
